About Tallship Unicorn

Mindy Doroski

Mindy Doroski, 1st Mate of the Unicorn, has been sailing since her Grandfather and Uncle took her out on their sailboat at the age of 16. The passion was born and fueled every weekend they sailed together on Peconic Bay, Long Island, NY.

While in College, in the fall of 1998 Mindy took part in SEAmester on board the Harvey Gamage. This introduced her to the tall ship experience, which changed her life forever. In December 1999, Mindy graduated from LIU Southampton with a degree in Environmental Science/Biology. After graduation it didn't take long to figure out that a land job was not for her. Within two months, she was on a plane heading to the Grenadines to get on the Kathryn B as a deckhand/hostess. Today Mindy has over seven years experience in the tall ship industry. She has worked her way up the hawse pipe, acquired a coast guard license, and held a variety of positions along the way ranging from Deckhand to Captain. She has sailed the Atlantic from Maine to Panama, the Pacific from Panama to Canada, The Bahamas, West Indies, a couple of the Great Lakes and a few points in between.

Each ship she sails brings new challenges and experiences, be it catching turtles while on the Geronimo, teaching at-risk youth to sail on Appledore V, tacking the brig Lady Washington, entertaining Mexican Navy personal on the Hawaiian Chieftain, or serving foreign dignitaries on America. She looks forward to passing on the knowledge and experience to women, of all ages, while onboard the Unicorn.
